Major concerns for women during divorce

The divorce process can be quite challenging, and even more so for women as many New Jersey residents have experienced. While both spouses will need to adjust to life post-divorce, women have some major concerns that need to be addressed in order to move on.

Women worry about their children during divorce. They worry how they will support, educate and take care of them. Often, this is combined with worries about where they will live with their children, if the place is safe and if they will adapt to living there. Concern for their children can be overwhelming and can take an emotional toll on all involved. However, mothers can take care of their children by keeping their teachers informed of the situation, by arranging for a professional such as a therapist to speak with their children and by involving the children in the transition process.

Another major concern for women involves finances after the divorce. In general, women's income tends to decrease by 20% after a divorce, which leads to certain challenges, such as how to pay for living expenses and how to prepare for retirement. Experts advise women to begin financial planning for life post-divorce as soon as they consider divorce. This includes getting all financial documents together, opening a savings account in their name only, closing joint credit cards, working on improving their credit score and making a budget based on their post-divorce income and expenses as soon as possible. Budgeting after the end of a marriage should include emergency fund and retirement savings whenever possible.

Residents who are planning on getting divorce may consult with a family law lawyer to help them organize their documents, file the right paperwork and plan for life post-divorce. A lawyer might also provide representation during negotiations with an ex as they work out the division of assets and other issues.
