Mourning and rebuilding after divorce

Going through a divorce in New Jersey can be one of the most stressful experiences in a person's life. It is natural and necessary to go through a period of mourning following such a significant loss, but the exact timeline and length of the mourning period can vary from case to case. Generally speaking, though, people will go through the same steps. The steps are acceptance, mourning, reinvention, goal setting and career protection.

Acceptance of the divorce as a real thing is a necessary step in the process of going through and recovering from divorce. It can be easy to get stuck in the past, especially if the person didn't want the divorce to happen. Mourning means taking the time a person needs to grieve over the loss. This might mean feeling difficult emotions like sadness, exhaustion or anger. Once the person has moved through the period of mourning, he or she can begin self-reinvention.

The positive side to a divorce is that the person may have the opportunity to recreate him- or herself. When there are two people involved, life is a co-creative process, but following a divorce, the parties move forward as individuals. The process of reinvention requires developing a positive mindset and establishing goals. It is important to devote sufficient time and energy to work as well; too many people who are divorcing let the stress of the process negatively affect their work, putting them behind.

An attorney might be able to help individuals and couples who are divorcing in New Jersey. An attorney may counsel the client regarding the divorce process or gather information and draft the petition for divorce. He or she might also be able to negotiate the terms of property division with the other spouse or argue on behalf of the client during child custody hearings.
