What Goes Into Child Support Calculations?

Both parents are responsible to provide financial support for their child for basic essentials such as:

  • Food
  • Clothing
  • Shelter
  • Health insurance
  • Education expenses, extracurricular activities
  • Child care costs

The New Jersey child support guidelines calculate the amount of support each parent pays according to what the parents earn and the average of what the intact family would spend on the child.

Parents obtain a child support order from their divorce decree or can apply for services from the New Jersey child support agency.

How Long Does Child Support Last?

The legislature approved support guidelines detailing how to calculate child support, which every child support figure is calculated from. While it is a complicated formula, it is a set formula which figures in each parent’s income, any day care costs, medical insurance payments, Social Security benefits and the custody arrangements.

Parents are obligated to pay the child support until their child reaches 17 or until their child graduates from high school.

Child support payments may continue past the child’s 18th birthday if the child has serious physical, emotional or other disabling conditions.

I am attorney Peter G. Aziz and I can relieve your burden of calculating child support or establish a modification if you feel you are unfairly paying more than your share of child support.

Can Child Support Be Changed?

Either parent may request a modification conference with the Child Support Agency if their life situation has changed. The changes have to be serious, permanent and unexpected in order for the child support modification to be granted.

At the Law Offices of Peter G. Aziz & Associates LLC in Clifton and Hackensack, our experienced child support lawyers can guide you through the processes from establishing child support to how to enforce existing support obligations.
