The legalization of marijuana in various states has led to some confusion. Just because a state decriminalized the use of marijuana for recreational purposes does not make it a free-for-all.
There are still rules that you must follow. Before you start using cannabis under New Jersey’s law, you should make sure that you understand the rules and what actually is the legal use of marijuana.
Basic rules of the law
Under New Jersey’s cannabis law, you must be at least 21 years old to legally use the substance. You do not have to be a citizen of the state. You can only make purchases at licensed dispensaries. You cannot buy it from a private seller.
The law also stipulates how much you can buy. You are allowed to buy dried, concentrates, oils and edibles. But there is a limit on the amount you can purchase. You can have up to one ounce of dried product, four grams of concentrates or oils and 1000 mg of edible products.
Important notes
Edibles do not include baked items, such as brownies. They are gummies and other similar nonperishable items. The amount is based on weight. You can buy a combination of items, but you will still have a limit overall on how much cannabis you can have, which may be less than the maximum amount for each. You can only possess one ounce total.
It is important to follow the rules for legal cannabis purchases. If you do not, even if you buy legally, you could face criminal charges.
